Thanks to our generous members, we were able to raise $1845.00 for our members in need. We currently have 6 members who have been out over 5 month's due to a non-work injury or illness. Thank you for your generosity.
 

Division Chairman 600/650 Election Results

Jason Thompson was re-elected to serve as Division Chairman of Divisions 600/650 over Fred Townes.

We have 2010 Scholarship forms for District 8 and Western Virginia Labor Federation

District 8 has a scholarship program for high school graduates who wish to enter college. Four scholarships (one from each state, Kentucky, Maryland, West Virginia, and Virginia) are awarded annually to the sons, daughters or legal wards of active, retired or deceased members of the Steelworkers Union. The Value of the the scholarship is $1000/year for up to four years ($4000.00 total).
 

Volunteers needed for Contract Action Team

The Local is actively seeking volunteers for the Contract Action Team in preparation for upcoming negotiations. If you wish to volunteer please notify Steve Jones, Davis Murphy, Eric Angel, or Jimmie Link by November 30th.
 

GATE COLLECTIONS FOR MEMBERS IN NEED

Over the past few years the Union’s Executive Board has been dealing with the difficult issue of sponsoring gate collections for our members in need.  The Executive Board (which also acts as the Union’s good will committee) feels that it has come up with a good solution to make sure that all members that are in difficult circumstances are allowed the same equal opportunity of help.

Senator Mark Warner on the Recent International Trade Commission Ruling

June 19, 2009 -- WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Mark R. Warner released the following statement today after the International Trade Commission ruled yesterday that increased imports from China have injured domestic tire industry workers:

Drug Testing Issue Finalized

Today the Company posted a revision to the April 30th notice as part of the settlement regarding its desire to expand it testing policy. The Company has withdrawn its proposal to implement random drug testing, however the Company will beging June 15, 2009 testing all employees involved in a workplace accident/injury who go to occupational medicine, the emergency room, etc. The Company will also begin testing all employees who return from medical leave of over 30 days.

Update Concerning Drug Testing

On April 30, 2009 the Company posted a notice on the bulletin board that they planned to go forward with their plans to expand the existing policy. The Union negotiating committee is requesting (in writing) that the Company postpone its planned implementation and bargain in good faith with the Committee. We are awaiting their response.

Protect Worker's Rights to Organize

How would you feel if a person committed murder and their only penalty was to paint on the inside wall of their house, for a period of one year, that they would cease and desist? Doesn’t seem like much of a penalty for violating the law does it; but that is exactly what happens when employers violate workers rights during Union organizing drives.
